Charleston, SC
South Carolina
By Marc Zelinsky

Founded in 1670, Charleston, South Carolina became one of the leading port cities of the times. Resting on the banks of rivers Cooper and Ashley, Charleston was known as the holy city for the collection of church steeples rising above the skyline reaching towards the heavens. Charleston established the first college in the state, and remains the home to the first medical university of the south. Early American history runs deep in Charleston. It was the site of the first major naval battle of the American Revolution in 1776 that repelled British warships and troops after they launched an attack on Fort Moultrie and  where Confederate troops from the Citadel fired upon Fort Sumter signaling the start of the Civil War.

WhatsCheaper.com recommends a horse-drawn carriage ride to begin your exploration of Charleston as a great way to become familiar with the city’s hidden wonders. Listen to a captivating tale of the city’s rich history as you look upon old Charlestonian homes along cobblestone streets lined with majestic live oaks where Spanish moss hangs from their branches like giant tapestries.

You can also discover the wonders of Charleston on foot; WhatsCheaper.com suggests reserving accommodations within walking distance of the famous Charleston Market. The “Market” has the feel of an old world bazaar with the upscale products merchandise of today.  Farmers and fisherman sold their goods in this historic location over 200 years ago; pause a moment to allow the sights, sounds and smells of the past come alive. Picture the merchants selling their goods, hear the horses pulling the wagons, and smell the fresh fruits and vegetables. Make your purchases then head south towards the battery which is home to large cannons that once protected the harbor during the civil war. The battery is located at the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula past “Rainbow Row” and from there you can catch a glimpse of Fort Sumter in the middle of Charleston’s harbor. Rainbow Row found its name in the pastel colored antebellum homes that stand watch over the harbor and is a Charleston landmark. WhatsCheaper.com recommends taking advantage of a walking tour that explores the interior of these grand homes with their ornate wrought iron adornments and breathtaking hidden gardens.

WhatsCheaper.com suggests a tour of the Charleston Museum, which is near the visitor center, where you can learn more about Charleston history. The front entrance to the museum is guarded by a life-size replica of the H. L. Hunley submarine. The Hunley was the first submarine in history to sink an enemy war ship. Continuing your historic tour, WhatsCheaper.com sends you across the Ravenel Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the western hemisphere, to Patriots Point. The USS Yorktown, a WWII era decommissioned aircraft carrier, is the main attraction of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. From Patriots Point you can also climb aboard a boat tour to Fort Sumter.

Charleston holds a wealth of activities throughout the year which may spark your interest.  WhatsCheaper.com draws your attention to the year-round festivals and events held in Charleston from the Cooper River Bridge Run to the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition to the Charleston Lowcountry Oyster Festival.
