Cologne
Germany
By Libby Peck

Along the River Rhine, Cologne comfortably sits in the middle of Germany as the country’s oldest city. Settled by the Roman Empire more than 2,000 years ago, the age of the city gives its citizens an overwhelming sense of pride for the ancient history that lies here. Despite the history of Cologne that runs as deep as the river it lies next to, the locals are more than welcome to share their enthusiasm with open arms to all walks of life, tourists and immigrants alike. With WhatsCheaper.com’s help, this diverse, friendly, cultural German hub is just waiting for you to come take a peek inside.

Although there are several airports within a train ride from the city center, WhatsCheaper.com wants to ensure you’re as close and comfortable to your true destination! We recommend flying into Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), which is only a 15-minute train ride away from the center of the city. Click the following link to get started booking your flight (http://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php)! Did you know that WhatsCheaper.com could also help you find a great rate for lodging? Be sure to click this link (http://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php) for great rates on great hotels.

When exiting the central train station from the front site, one of the first things you will notice are gray Gothic towers piercing the sky. This cathedral is Kölner Dom, a Roman Catholic Church and also Germany’s most popular tourist destination. If you’re ready for a physical challenge, WhatsCheaper.com suggests walking the 509 stairs up the south tower for an amazing view of Cologne from above. Make sure to not do this during a mass!

The Kölsche (people of Cologne) truly have an appreciation for architecture, as seen in the Dom, as well as the arts. For the city’s relatively small size, it has a remarkably large collection of world-renowned museums. WhatsCheaper.com wants you to visit the Museum Ludwig if you’re a fan of modern art, and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum if you tend to focus on more traditional art from ancient civilizations to the mid-twentieth century. Is fine art just not for you? Fret not—there’s a chocolate museum too! The Schokoladenmuseum takes you on a tour of 3000 years of chocolate history.

Of course, being in Germany, you may be distracted by a delicacy other than chocolate. Beer is a staple of German culture; in Cologne, the Kölsch variety is king. This beer can only be brewed in the Kölsch region of Germany, making it a must-try on your WhatsCheaper.com trip through this city. Be sure to also visit the Früh Kölsch, the most popular Kölsch brewery in the city. Explore different neighborhoods for different bars, and also be sure to go to a beer garden located in one of Cologne’s many parks. Relaxing and chatting with friends over a cold Kölsch is an activity that tourists and locals alike love.

Cologne is a place to truly enjoy life. From beer drinking to art-seeking set amidst old-world architecture, this is where to go when you want a truly cultural yet laid-back experience. WhatsCheaper.com is ready to help book your trip when you are!
