Saint Louis, MO
Missouri
By Rhoda Baker

Built in 1965 within the (President) Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in Saint Louis, the Gateway Arch stands 630 feet tall along the banks of the Mississippi River. It is an American icon and plays a big part in the city’s history and its reputation as the Gateway to the WeSaint It is certainly a must see part of any trip to Saint Louis.

You can relax and enjoy a visit to Saint Louis by letting WhatsCheaper.com help you book the trip. You’ll land at Saint Louis’ Lambert Field (STL). Arrange your flight by going to (http://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php) And, travelers can start their search for great hotels by following the link to the hotel portion of our website (http://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php)

WhatsCheaper.com does recommend starting your trip with a tram ride to the top of the Arch, the nation’s tallest man-made monument. When Jefferson funded the Lewis and Clark exposition to search for the Pacific Ocean, they started in Saint Louis in 1804 and ended two years later back in the city. That expedition was the catalyst that began the great westward migration of wagon trains and stagecoaches. When you visit the Arch at the riverfront you can see a documentary film, visit the Museum of Westward Expansion and even go shopping. But there’s much more to this diverse city that makes it worth a trip.

Then, travelers can venture to the riverfront where Pierre Laclede, a French fur trader built a group of cabins on a hill near the river.  He named the new colony after the patron saint of the King of France. Today in recognition of that beginning, the river area is home to Laclede’s Landing. North of the Arch along cobblestone streets, century old cast iron façade buildings house gift shops, restaurants, taverns and nightlife entertainment.

But, don’t forget Saint Louis has a rich music history with ragtime (since 1904 and Scott Joplin), blues (migrating north from Mississippi and combining with ragtime to create Saint Louis Blues) jazz and R&B. Music greats like Tina Turner, Miles Davis and Chuck Berry started in Saint Louis, and you might like to visit Scott Joplin’s historic home.

If your taste leans to classical music, the Saint Louis Symphony is world-renowned and its home, Powell Hall, is rich in history as well as mystery.  The building, originally called The Saint Louis Theatre, was renovated in 1968 keeping its old architecture true and it’s gold and white opulence awe inspiring. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man named George who wears a white suit and hat and plays with lights and elevators. He is thought to be a former vaudevillian.

You might also enjoy an evening at one of Saint Louis’ five casinos, or an afternoon at Saint Louis’ Six Flags amusement park, located just 30 miles outside the city in Eureka, MO.

Of course, WhatsCheaper.com thinks you can’t leave Saint Louis without a free tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery which has been producing Budweiser beer in Saint Louis since 1876, and a visit to Grant’s Farm (also free) which is the original 181 acre ancestral home of the Busch family. There, among many other attractions, you can see the Clydesdale horses in their stables and come home with a photo taken with one of the Clydesdales.

On the whole, WhatsCheaper.com can promise you an abundant number of activities to choose from in Saint Louis. It is most assuredly worth the trip, and you’ll want to return. Just click the link above to book your next vacation to Saint Louis, the “Gateway to the West.”
