Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s capital and the very first European city of the New World, allows visitors to step back in time and retrace Christopher Columbus’ footsteps. Filled with historical significance, shops, and museums, the “Cradle of America” guarantees a vacation that will rival all others.

Founded by Christopher Columbus’ brother Bartholomew in 1496, Santo Domingo is the oldest city of the New World. Considering its historical significance, WhatsCheaper.com suggests you visit the Colonial City first. Within the 11 blocks of the Zona Colonial, its Spanish name, visitors will find many firsts: the first cathedral, the first monastery, the first hospital, and the first university. Located on Calle las Damas, the first street of the Americas, Las Casas Reales (Royal Houses)and its adjacent museum, Museo de las Cases Reales, showcase artifacts and exhibits from the Spanish colonial seat of authority. Museum hours are 9 to 5 Tuesday—Saturday and 10 to 4 on Sundays. Entrance fees vary for adults and students. Alcazar de Colon (Columbus Palace) is another important stop on your city tour. Also located on Calle las Damas, this 22 room home was built by Columbus’ son Diego and served as his residence during his term as viceroy. Lastly, WhatsCheaper.com recommends touring Fortelaza Ozama, which is one of the oldest forts in the Americas. An entrance fee is required to tour the fort; guided tours are also available for an additional price. Several restaurants and gift shops also line these historic streets.

After visiting the Colonial City, WhatsCheaper.com advises you to take advantage of the many outdoor activities Santo Domingo has to offer. Only a ten minute drive from the city, Los Tres Ojos National Park takes visitors deep into three limestone caves that open to four majestic lagoons. The park opens daily from 8 to 5. Neighboring the park on Avenida Ana, Faro a Colon (Columbus Lighthouse) is a 688-foot-tall lighthouse that supposedly houses Columbus’ remains. This cross structure, built between 1986 and 1992, has a lighting system that projects an immense cross into the sky that can be seen even in Puerto Rico.  The monument is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 to 5:30. Admission prices vary for adults and children. Also of interest to nature lovers is the Acuario Nacional (National Aquarium). Located at Avenida Espana #75, this open-air aquarium has approximately 3,000 live specimens of 250 species of marine life. Open Tuesday—Sunday from 9:30 to 5:30, the aquarium provides fun and education for vacationers of all ages.

Aside from an abundance of historical sites and natural wonders, Santo Domingo also has bustling markets and an exuberant nightlife.  For shoppers, WhatsCheaper.com suggests hitting Mercado Modelo at Avenida Mella, Mercado Los Alcarrizos near Calle Triste, and the District of Piantini has two contemporary shopping centers. Those looking to enjoy Santo Domingo late into the night should visit the many bars and clubs that occupy the streets of Gazcue, 27 de Febrero, Avenida Abraham Lincoln, and Roberto Pastoriza.

With its beautiful beaches and unlimited opportunities for specialized excursions, WhatsCheaper.com recommends taking full advantage of all that Santo Domingo has to offer. Click on the link above to book your dream Caribbean vacation today.
