The historic district located in Downtown Augusta features buildings constructed between 1801 and 1967. Most sites are centrally located around Broad Street including suggestions listed by WhatsCheaper.com.

Plan to make your first visit to the boyhood home of President Woodrow Wilson. Designated as a Historic Landmark in 2008, the home has been maintained and preserved by Historic Augusta as a tool to educate and inform visitors on how life in Augusta influenced President Wilson’s life.

You’ll want to continue visiting historic landmarks by exploring the nation’s only industrial power canal. Built in 1845 and still operating as it was intended, the Augusta Canal was designated as Georgia’s first National Heritage Area. With several access points within the city, visitors are welcome to walk, bike, kayak or canoe to view wetlands, pre-Civil war structures and Confederate States of America buildings. One building of note is the Confederate Powder Works. Built in 1862 to supply Confederate soldiers with gunpowder, the Augusta Canal was chosen as the site for the only permanent building constructed by the Confederate States of America.

Another historical area to add to your itinerary is the Augusta Cotton Exchange Building. A significant presence during the height of the cotton industry, the Cotton Exchange is said to have processed more than 200,000 bales of cotton and housed a “man only” escape for football games and cock fights. The building was renovated in 1988 and now houses a bank.

WhatsCheaper.com suggests you also plan to tour the area’s museums and parks. Collections at the Augusta Museum of History feature artifacts from Paleo-Indian period and Civil War. The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, a visual art gallery and provider of visual art education, showcases local and regional talent. Pendleton King Park, located in the city’s center near Broad Street, offers superb bird watching views nestled on a 64-acre sanctuary.

While enjoying Augusta, rest assured you will be entertained day and night with an abundance of affordable eateries and nightclubs. National chain restaurants as well as those with local flavor are available for all of your dining needs. Whether you enjoy dancing your night away or taking in a jazz set, Augusta has several choices for evening activities.
