Baltimore, MD
Maryland
By Kristen A. Grose

Some residents refer to Baltimore as “Charm City”; others might call it “Crabtown."  A hometown local will likely blurt out: “it’s Balamer, Hon!” Whatever you call it, Baltimore, located on the Chesapeake Bay, is famous for its seafood, and is the largest city and cultural center in Maryland.

WhatsCheaper.com can help you explore your travel options.  The Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is located about 20 minutes outside the city.  You can book your flight with WhatsCheaper.com by clicking here (https://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php). Once arriving at the airport you can easily connect downtown by hopping on the Light Rail. You can book your hotel reservations by clicking here (https://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php).

If you’re visiting Baltimore for the weekend, start off at the National Aquarium, where “Prices take a Dive Friday’s After Five”!  These tickets are discounted 75%, and WhatsCheaper.com suggests booking in advance.

Afterwards, take a stroll over to the nearby neighborhoods of Harboreast or Little Italy, where you can choose from a bountiful selection of award winning restaurants.  WhatsCheaper.com suggests taking the scenic route along the pier to the unique Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse.  It’s the oldest of its kind in Maryland and part of the Baltimore Maritime Museum (BMM) Collection.  On the way, you might also spot the Columbus Monument.  Wine bars, dance clubs, and upscale movie theatres are all within walking distance, beckoning you to enjoy the rest of the evening in style.

Don’t stay out too late, because you’ll want to get an early start the following day!  No trip to Baltimore is complete without an excursion to Fort McHenry, the birthplace of the United States National Anthem.  Start at the visitor center which screens a complimentary film about the Battle of Baltimore and Francis Scott Key's composition of the Star Bangle Banner.  There is a nominal fee to go inside the fort, but you can opt for a lovely walk around the exterior grounds which won’t cost you a dime!

If American History is your thing, then follow up with a visit to the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House.  The museum is located in the old residence of Mary Pickersgill, maker of the flag that inspired this great nation.  While you’re there, WhatsCheaper.com urges you to swing next door and check out the Maryland African American History and Culture Museum or the Holocaust Memorial and Sculpture just a few blocks away. Or if you have young ones in tow, don’t forget Port Discovery Children’s Museum.

WhatsCheaper.com is all about saving you money, and what can be cheaper than free? Free is the exact admission you’ll be charged to visit Baltimore's Premier Art Museums.  Start with a visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art, located next to John’s Hopkins University.  The collection features the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.  Next is the Walters Art Gallery, which displays an impressive overview of World Art and is located south in the urban, cultural neighborhood of Mount Vernon.

When you leave the Gallery, it will be easy to spot the Washington Monument and Museum, soaring 176 feet above Mount Vernon Place.  It was built more then 50 years before the more famous monument in DC, and in fact was the first in the country.  For panoramic views of the city, make a small donation and climb the 228 steps to the observation area.

You will come to find that Baltimore is a collection of neighborhoods, all rich in history, but also very much alive in the present. Baltimore residents are proud of their hometown, and the “Honfest”, celebrated annually in Hampden, is a good example of this. To learn more about the “Hon Culture” refer to films by Baltimore native, John Waters.  WhatsCheaper.com suggests Pink Flamingo, which will shed light on the massive sculpture outside of Café Hon, and a fun parody of the local scene.

As one would say in the local Bawlamerese dialect, “Book the trip, HON!” by clicking the above links.
