Beijing
China
By Chelsie Kozera

Home to 19 million people, containing14 urban districts, and possessing 3,000 years of history is the political and cultural center of China. Beijing, the capital city of the economic world power, lies in the northeast region of China. Make this exotic Asian city your next vacation destination!

Fly into Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and take the subway, bus, or taxi into the city, 17 miles away. Book your flight with WhatsCheaper.com (https://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php). This is the 14th busiest airport in the world and the second largest passenger terminal in the world, after Dubai International Airport. Don’t let China’s largest airport intimidate you on first arrival because Beijing, although large in size and dense in population, is a magnificent place that is peaceful and historic. Hotels near Tiananmen Square are centrally located near the Forbidden City, the night market, and numerous shops and restaurants. WhatsCheaper.com can help you book your accommodations in Beijing (https://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php).

A must see site in Beijing is the Forbidden City. Once an imperial palace, now a popular site for tourists to visit so they can get a glimpse into the past at an ancient world that is now nestled amongst twenty-first century skyscrapers. You can hire a guide to walk you around the abandoned palace or go it alone. WhatsCheaper.com recommends a tour guide because they truly help to paint a picture of the historic site once alive with activity from the emperor, his concubines, and numerous government officials.

Just outside the Forbidden City is Tiananmen Square, the third largest city square in the world. Surrounding the square are two ancient gates, the Great Hall of the People, and the National Museum of China. This square has been the site of numerous protests, parades, and demonstrations. You can also sneak a peek at the preserved body of Chairman Mao at his mausoleum in the middle of the square, where he has been since his death in 1976.

When the sun sinks down below the horizon this city doesn’t sleep… it eats! At Beijing’s night market you’ll find a variety of unique cuisine. ‘Noodles and fried rice?’ you ask. Not this market; it serves up dishes like, dog, cat, snake, bull penis, pig intestines, and more deep fried bugs than you can handle.  This WhatsCheaper.com author recommends the deep fried scorpions. They taste like French fries!

Not far from the food you can shop for your travel souvenirs. China is known for its collection of jade, which can be pricey if you buy it at a jade factory but affordable at the local market. You’ll find plenty of one of a kind souvenirs and even more generic ones that are replicated all over the country. Looking for something of quality to bring home from your Chinese vacation? Stop off at a silk factory where you’ll see how the Chinese make beautiful silk fabric; here you’ll have the opportunity to buy pillowcases, bedding, or clothing made right in the factory. Be warned that shopping in China can get quite aggressive. The vendors’ sales tactics include, yelling loudly at you, holding on to your arm and not letting go, following you around the market, continuing to lower the price until it’s practically free, and a personal favorite: giving you a sob story about their lives to push you over the edge and make you buy that over-sized Buddha statue. Nonetheless, Chinese markets are an experience worth having and can be extremely fun if entered with the right mindset.

If you don’t want to be stressed by having to haggle for souvenirs then enjoy a nice afternoon at Beijing Zoo instead. Here you can admire all different kinds of animals, but most tourists go to spot China’s own pandas playing in the large indoor/outdoor exhibit. The zoo, night market, square, and ancient imperial palace are attractions that will make your visit to Beijing all the more exciting, but don’t forget to visit the most iconic landmark of them all… The Great Wall of China.

The wall is a 35 to 70 mile drive from the city depending on which part you visit. The construction of this world wonder began in 220 B.C. and it currently stretches for 5,500 miles across Central Asia. It was originally built for defense and controlling immigration and emigration. Today it brings tourists from all over the world to marvel at its enormity. Most people make the trip to China for this attraction alone, but there’s plenty more to see in Beijing once you’ve checked standing on the Great Wall of China off your bucket list.

Beijing is the perfect blend of culture, history, and modernity, which is why tourists flock to this vacation destination. WhatsCheaper.com would like to encourage you to book your trip to Beijing with us today!
