Billings, MT
Montana
By Marisa Alpert

Billings, Montana was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and has come to be an important location in the history, and prehistory, of the American west. Billings is home to the famous Pictograph Caves which were designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. It is also the closest city to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.  Billings is also only a short drive away from Yellowstone National Park.

WhatsCheaper.com invites you to visit Billings and experience a piece of American history for yourself. In the heart of the city is Billings Logan International Airport (BIL) where flights arrive daily from all over the country. Visit WhatsCheaper.com to compare deals on flights (https://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php). We can also help you book a hotel room when you visit our hotel accommodations deal finder (https://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php).

The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument serves as a memorial to the 7th Cavalry soldiers and soldiers of the Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho soldiers who fought and died in the now infamous Battle of Little Bighorn. It includes the battlefield which is marked with numerous fallen soldier marker stones, the Custer National Cemetery, and also the site of a concurrent battle with the Plains Indians fought by Custer’s other two battalions about three miles away. General Custer was originally buried here but has since been interred in the West Point Cemetery in New York. In an effort to memorialize both combatant forces, both a U.S. Army Memorial and a Native American Memorial have been erected. Every year on the anniversary of the battle, June 25th, fees are waived and special speakers and activities occur.

WhatsCheaper.com also suggests that you visit Pompey’s Pillar, a rock formation towering above the Yellowstone River which holds the only physical evidence of the famed Lewis and Clark expedition still remaining along the route: William Clark’s dated signature carved into the stone tower. The Pillar, which Clark named for the son of their guide, Sacagawea, is part of a formation that archeological evidence suggests has been in contact with humans for at least 11,000 years.

If you’re looking for a little less American History and a little more American pastime take a trip to Dehler Park Stadium. Primarily used for baseball and home to the Billings Mustangs, Dehler Park opened its doors in 2008. It replaced Billings landmark, Cobb Field, which was in operation for nearly 75 years. It has often been used for concerts and arts performances, perhaps most notably in 2010 concert given by John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan.

You can also get acquainted with the area by taking a stroll through the Historic District in downtown Billings. There you’ll find the Western Heritage Center and the Moss Mansion Museum.  The Western Heritage Center is home to a collection of historical photographs, the Cecil Dunn Collection of Ntive American Artifacts, an expansive collection of regional art, architectural drawings, textiles, firearms, western memorabilia, and much more. There are also many activities specifically designed for children and special exhibits of history and art not in the permanent collection. Billings’ famed Moss Mansion is another exciting way to get a glimpse of history. The home was built in 1903 and was designed by Henry Hardenbergh of New York who also designed the original Waldorf Astoria, among other luxury hotels. Visitors can view the interior of the mansion on a one-hour guided tour which takes place three times a day. WhatsCheaper.com recommends that your make a reservation in advance. We also recommend a visit to the Pictograph Caves to learn about American prehistory and see paintings of warriors and animals that date back as far as 3500 years!
