As there are several interesting locations to visit in Buffalo, WhatsCheaper.com suggests stopping by the Albright-Knox Gallery, which was first established by Buffalo entrepreneur and philanthropist, John J. Albright in 1890. The building was originally supposed to function as the Fine Arts Pavilion for the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, but was later turned into an art gallery, which now displays exhibits, including modern and contemporary art. A few examples of artwork that the gallery owns include pieces of Impressionistic and Post-Impressionistic works by nineteenth century artists, such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh. There is also cubism, surrealism and constructivism works from artists like Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse.
Along with the wondrous art that Buffalo has to offer, the city also features Broadway shows, which can be seen, staged at the historic Shea’s Performing Arts Center. The theater itself, initially called Shea’s Buffalo, opened in 1926 and first showed silent movies before welcoming Broadway productions. It’s one of the only theater spaces in the U.S. that still uses its original theater organ that was designed for this particular theater. The “Mighty Wurlitzer” organ was custom made by the Wurlitzer company and was one of five organs in the entire world that had tonal finishing. Some of the more recent Broadway shows that have been staged in the theater are Wicked, Rent and Chicago.
Another must-see stop in Buffalo would be the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, which gives tours regularly. The building located on 641 Delaware Avenue preserves the Ansley Wilcox House, which was where Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated as President of the United States on September 14, 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. Part of the house serves as a museum displaying several artifacts from the Pan-American Exposition, which includes wine glasses, plates, playing cards and the key to the Temple of Music. A recreation of the Oval Office as it would have looked when Roosevelt was President is also featured in the house and also allows you to send e-mails to yourself from the interactive desk.
Lastly, Buffalo City Hall is one of the oldest structures in the downtown area of Buffalo. The building was opened to the public in 1931, Wade & Jones and stands as one of the tallest municipal buildings in New York. Niagara Square’s Lions and McKinley memorial and the detailed relief sculptures over the front entrance are just some of the statues that surround the building.
