Originally settled by English and Scottish immigrants in the 1700s, Chapel Hill is rich in history. Named after the New Hope Chapel, which sat on a hill just outside the original village, Chapel Hill is home to and near many historical sites. Bennett Place, where Confederate General Joseph Johnston surrendered to Union General William Tecumseh Sherman in the largest surrender of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, is located in nearby Durham. The site is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday and holds living history programs throughout the year. Montrose Gardens, located in the bordering town of Hillsborough, is a historic garden with unusual plants and 19th century architecture that was begun by the Graham family in the 1840s and has served as an inspiration for Southern gardens. William Alexander Graham served as a North Carolina governor and senator, and was Secretary of the Navy under President Millard Fillmore.
