Columbia, South Carolina is a city booming with opportunity for a break from the everyday life.  Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, is an excellent place for a long weekend getaway, family vacation, or even a good day trip. Many travelers may not think of Columbia being a tourist spot with much to do but that is simply not the case.  WhatsCheaper.com has several suggestions for you and your family to enjoy all that Columbia has to offer.

Columbia has one main airport, Columbia Metropolitan (CAE). Right on Gervais Street in downtown is the Vista area. The city of Columbia has worked with local businesses and retailers to maintain the rich history that Columbia has. Many of the buildings were constructed just after the turn of the 19th century. WhatsCheaper.com invites you to take advantage of the Vista. Throughout the year many festivals are right here in this area and many are free of charge. The Vista area hosts restaurants, unique shops, bars, and art galleries.

History enthusiasts will feel right at home in Columbia. WhatsCheaper.com recommends making your way to the State Capitol Building, which is just down the street and offers tours through the building that began construction in 1851. The State House is home to the General Assembly, the Governor’s office, and the Lieutenant Governor’s office.  During the Civil War, six cannonballs hit the State Capitol Building. These spots are indicated on the outside walls by six bronze stars.  Our 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, grew up right here in Columbia.  His boyhood home is setup up for tours. The Historical Society in Columbia also offers three other homes to tour. Robert Mills, one of South Carolina’s most famous architects, constructed his mansion and garden here in Columbia. Mills is famous for designing several monuments in Washington D.C., such as the Washington Monument. The mansion and other homes are open for tours year round at a nominal fee.

For those looking for outdoor fun, Columbia has several of state parks and attractions. Activities such as kayaking on the Saluda River or hiking through Columbia Riverfront Park are all options. Lake Murray is an easy drive from downtown and offers everything from fishing to boat rental to camping. Lake Murray is one of the largest man-made lakes and boasts over 600 miles of shoreline. Whatscheaper.com suggests that all visitors make a point to see Lake Murray. On the outskirts of downtown there are even more options. The swampy Congaree National Park has several trails to hike through over 22,000 acres. The park contains some of the tallest trees on the eastern seaboard. Rangers offer tours during certain times of the year. And best of all, the park is free of charge.

When in Columbia, Whatscheaper.com urges you and your family to see a sporting event. Williams Brice Stadium is home to the University of South Carolina’s Gamecock football team. The stadium holds over 80,000 fans and is an experience that must be taken into consideration. Baseball is another big draw here in Columbia. The University of South Carolina’s baseball team won the National Title in 2010 and the stadium holds over 8,000 and 1,000 more for standing room only.

Overall, WhatsCheaper.com can promise a great experience for you and your family whether it’s a long weekend or a vacation. Outdoor activities or art gallery perusing, Columbia has all you could ask for.
