Kalamazoo, MI
By Elizabeth Fuga

There are various ideas of what the word Kalamazoo means.  Some believe that it is derived from the Potawatomi word for “reflecting waters.”  Though, the most popular belief is that it means “the place where water boils” in reference to a legend where a Potawatomi named Fleet Foot had to run to the river and back before a pot of water boiled in order to win his bride.  The city of Kalamazoo, Michigan was named after the river that runs through it, and is a city rich in history.

The major airport in Kalamazoo, located in Kalamazoo County, is called Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO).  It is located near the central business district of Kalamazoo and also near the city (as the name may imply) of Battle Creek.  WhatsCheaper.com can be used to book your flight to Kalamazoo, Michigan today (http://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php). We can also assist with booking your hotel reservations, just click here (http://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php) to start your search with WhatsCheaper.com.

Interestingly, there is the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, or Air Zoo, located at the airport.  Not only is this a museum in a classical sense of the word it is also an indoor amusement park.  The Air Zoo is partnered with the Smithsonian and, as such, has many rare, antique airplanes (many of which are still able to fly).  The museum also features flight simulators of bombings and flights to Mars as well as a stunt biplane hot air balloon.

Kalamazoo has many unusual museums including The Gilmore Car Museum.  WhatsCheaper.com recommends this museum for any fans of automobiles.  The museum has a sizable collection of vintage cars and even has some that have appeared in Disney movies.

The Kalamazoo Valley Museum focuses on science, history, and technology and is designed, primarily, to children.  The museum has exhibits that feature Egyptian mummies, the human senses, the history of Kalamazoo and the items Kalamazoo has produced over time.  It’s an exciting, hands-on experience for all members of the family.

Every year, the Kalamazoo Valley Community College sponsors the Kalamazoo Animation Festival International.  This animation festival not only inspires and educates aspiring animators it also showcases the city’s animation industry and provides both domestic and international entertainment.

Since Kalamazoo is so close to Western Michigan University, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the local college sports.  You can attend a hockey game at the Lawson Area, basketball and volleyball at the University Arena, or football at Waldo Stadium.  WhatsCheaper.com thinks a visit to any one of these stadiums is if you are an enthusiast of college sports.

Kalamazoo is also known as “Mall City” due to the fact that the city had the first open-air mall in the country.  Even today, Kalamazoo has been able to hold on to its title with the Kalamazoo Mall located in the downtown area.  This mall features over 160 retailers in addition to its unique restaurants and pubs.  Though, this is far from the only place to shop.  There are plenty of name-brand retailers along Main Street, and, if you enjoy antiquing, there are several antique stores located in and around the city.
