Louisville, KY
By Amy Haeberlin

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, The Great Gatsby, was based largely off the Seelbach, a legendary turn-of-the-century hotel here.  It’s the home of the “Hot Brown,” chewing gum, the “Happy Birthday” song, and the cheeseburger.  But where is here?

WhatsCheaper.com invites you to visit Louisville, Kentucky, the 17th most populous city in the US.  WhatsCheaper.com recommends flying into the Louisville International Airport (SDF), but the city is also accessible from the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG) and the Bluegrass Lexington Airport (LEX).  The city is within easy driving distance of Cincinnati, OH; Indianapolis, IN and Nashville, TN. To book your flight with WhatsCheaper.com just click here (https://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php) to get started on your search. WhatsCheaper.com can also assist with your hotel experience. Louisville is rich in history.  It was founded at the Falls of the Ohio, a 26 foot drop in river elevation, which features one of the largest exposed fossilized coral reefs in the world.  Visitors can walk across the exposed reef, taking pictures of the fossilized remains of the Devonian period animals, before visiting the Falls of the Ohio interpretive center in nearby Clarksville, IN.

George Rogers Clark founded the city in 1778, initially as a Revolutionary War fort. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, the 1803 journey to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory, also began at the Falls. Situated on the Mason-Dixon Line, Louisville is often referred to as “the Northernmost Southern state” or the “Southernmost Northern state,” and shows the influence of both cultures.

Louisville is a city that loves its performing arts, boasting not only a full-time orchestra, opera and ballet, but also a regional theater and children’s theater.  WhatsCheaper.com recommends checking out the area’s numerous museums and attractions, including the world famous Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the Frazier International History Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, the Louisville Science Center, and the J.B. Speed Art Museum, as well as the Louisville Zoo.

Sports fans can attend University of Louisville athletic events or watch the Louisville Bats, a AAA baseball team, play at Slugger Field.  The Louisville Extreme Park, a renowned skate park, offers another change of pace.  And for the golfers in the group, Louisville has many courses available for play, most notably the Valhalla Golf Club, which has hosted several PGA events, including the 2008 Ryder Cup.

After enjoying the attractions available around Louisville, WhatsCheaper.com suggests dining at one of the area’s many original restaurants, featuring cuisine from around the world.  To wind down your evening – or to get it started – you can visit the downtown bar scene, including Louisville’s 4th Street Live! a huge entertainment complex with dance clubs, bars and restaurants or, for a more relaxed evening, the Highlands area with local pubs and pool halls.

For the outdoorsy type, the newly remodeled Waterfront Park provides a scenic view of the Ohio River, with walking/biking paths, fountains, and statues. In 2005, the City of Parks initiative began, which includes plans for a 100+ mile Louisville Loop Trail connecting the area’s 120+ parks, several dog parks, and numerous upgrades.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail begins just outside the city, with tours of several distilleries, providing a glimpse into Kentucky’s checkered past.  The Bourbon Festival, held in September, also showcases the region’s famous spirits.  Other events, like the St. James Art Festival, which offers visitors an opportunity to view and purchase local area crafts, and “Light Up Louisville,” the Dickens era holiday festival, let visitors see the city at its finest.

Of course, if possible, WhatsCheaper.com recommends scheduling your trip during the end of April.  The city comes alive during the Kentucky Derby Festival – a two week period beginning with “Thunder Over Louisville”, the world’s largest fireworks display and accompanying military air show.  The Festival continues with events like the Great Balloon Race, the Steamboat Race, and the Kentucky Derby Parade.  Local bands play at the Chow Wagons nightly, and the horses are running at Churchill Downs, where visitors can bet the ponies and visit the onsite museum.  The Festival culminates with the running of the Kentucky Derby, the most famous two minutes in sports history.

WhatsCheaper.com recommends visiting Louisville for its rich heritage and activities suitable for every interest and budget.  Click on the link above to get started on your journey.
