The first sight we want to highlight is the Fourvière district of Lyon, located on a hill west of the old town. You can (and really should!) reach the top of the hill by way of the funicular (an inclined cable railway), the oldest functioning funicular in the world. Once on top, be sure to check out the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.  The basilica, whose architecture draws from both Roman and Byzantine styles and is impressive in itself, offers an excellent panoramic view of the city and river Saône below.  Located near the basilica is Lyon's Tour métallique de Fourvière (slightly less charming in English- Metallic tower of Fourvière).  Similar in appearance to the Eiffel Tower, this steel tower reaches up to 357 meters above the main city, making its top the highest point in Lyon. The tower is a functioning TV tower, but unlike Paris's famous tower, entrance into the Tour métallique de Fourvière is not open to the public. Finally, Fourvière also where you will find the Théâtres Romains de Fourvière.  The old Roman theater, built when the Romans built the city in 15 BC, is mostly a tourist attraction now, but hosts the Nuits de Fourvière festival.

Next, recommends checking out Vieux Lyon, or the Old Lyon district.  These narrow cobblestone streets along the river Saône tell stories dating back to the Middle Ages. It is in Vieux Lyon you will find St, Jean Cathedral, a beautiful mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Inside the cathedral is an astronomical clock, that rings daily between noon and 4pm, and we feel this is very much worth seeing. There is a dress code for the cathedral, so dress appropriately! Adjacent to the cathedral is St. Jean Archaeological Garden, the site of remains of structures as old as the 4th century.

Finally, urges you to resist turning in early, as Lyon really comes to life after the sun goes down.  Many of the city’s buildings and monuments are illuminated, creating one of the most beautiful and romantic settings you will find in all of Europe. We highly recommend a drink in one of the bars in the Presqu'île district and a walk along the bank of the river Saône or through Place Sathonay (also beautiful in the daytime for a cup of coffee) under the city’s lights.

With so much history to its name (and more sights and monuments than we have room for here!), the capital city of the Rhone-Alpes region makes a fascinating stop for history buffs, culture connoisseurs and everyone else.
