As expected, the first thing recommends you do is hit the beach! Marathon’s spectacular Sombrero Beach provides a picture perfect border to a shady park, complete with picnic areas, beach volleyball courts and playground for the children.  Sombrero Beach is not only a fantastic attraction for people, but turtles as well! From April to October, the picnic tables on the beach are removed to better accommodate the Loggerhead Turtles, who come to lay their eggs. Snorkelers will not be disappointed, as they will find a bounty of marine life including fish, turtles and dolphins.

Next, check out Crane Point Museum and Nature Center.  This incredible estate spans 64 acres covered in exquisite hardwood trees and includes 2.5 miles of nature trails, a Museum of Natural History, Wild Bird Center, and children’s activity area (complete with pirate ship!).  Throughout the property and along the trails, you will find educational exhibits and displays for both adults and children. Crane Point is a fantastic experience and a must-do for those traveling with the little ones!

The city of Marathon covers many of the Keys, and urges you to take a trip back in time and visit historic Pigeon Key. Only five acres in size, Pigeon Key served as home to railway workers and operators of the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway, the Old Seven Mile Bridge, which made possible access to Key West from Florida. Today, owned by the Pigeon Island Foundation, the entire island serves as a railroad museum, where you will see historic artifacts and photographs telling the story of the railroad’s construction as well as chronicling the development of the island as well. For souvenirs, visit the gift shop on Kinight’s Key, oceanside at mile marker 47.

Next, encourages you to check out Boot Key Harbor City Marina.  The harbor is an excellent place to catch a sunset, a drink and a fresh seafood dinner.  The marina is not the only place in Marathon for dinner and drinks! Hideaway Café, Island Fish Co. and Porky’s Bayside BBQ offer excellent meals. Seafood lovers should definitely ask about the fresh catch of the day, and bargain lovers should check out happy hours and specials!
