The very first place you should visit in New Orleans is, without a doubt, the French Quarter. Also known as Vieux Carré, this neighborhood is considered the oldest in New Orleans. Founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the French Quarter is filled with a wide array of historic buildings. In the middle of the exciting French Quarter is Jackson Square. This airy, open park is the size of a city block and is located close to the Mississippi River.

Three historic, 18th-century buildings lay just a stone's throw away from Jackson Square: the St. Louis Cathedral, The Presbytere, and the Cabildo. The St. Louis Cathedral is considered the oldest operating cathedral in the entire United States. Renovated a total of three times, the first cathedral was built in 1718. The Presbytere was initially intended to house Capuchin monks in 1791, but it was soon transformed in 1813 to serve as the Town Hall. The Cabildo acted as the seat of the colonial government in 1788. The first Cabildo unfortunately burned in the Great New Orleans Fire of 1788, but the current Cabildo was built in 1795. The site of the finalization of the Louisiana Purchase, the Cabildo was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The Cabildo is also home to the Lousiana State Museum, which was established in 1911. suggests visiting the world famous Bourbon Street, which runs the entire length of the French Quarter. It should be noted that the restaurant does not take reservations, so be prepared to stand in line with other hungry patrons.

Of must mention the wonderful festival known as Mardi Gras! This legendary celebration is known all over the world and occurs about two weeks before Fat Tuesday.
