Paracas may be small in size, but it portrays a large scope of perfectly Peruvian personality.  Upon entering Paracas City, one will notice the mysterious figure ingrained into the sandy hillside of the Paracas Peninsula.   Called the “Candelabro,” this chandelier shaped geoglyph has no interpretable meaning, but stands as a stunning reminder of the primitive Paracas culture.

Like many cities in the adventure conducive nation of Peru, Paracas offers a plethora of thrilling activities.  The perpetually breezy bay of Paracas produces a flawless atmosphere for windsurfing as well as the increasing popular kite surfing.  If something other than water sports are preferred, one can catch a bus to the city of Ica, from there the unbelievable desert oasis of Huacachina is just a short taxi ride away.  The oasis seemingly appears out of nowhere, and for a small fee offers sandboard rentals as well as adrenaline filled sand buggy tours through the massive dunes of the Sahara-like desert.

For those enticed by the prospect of unadulterated nature and wildlife, Paracas is conveniently nestled near La Reserva Nacional de Paracas (Paracas National Park.) Officially a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is the only marine reservation in Peru, and is considered one of the richest ecosystems in the world.  A stroll along the ancient pre-Inca coastline will reveal colonies of sea lions, schools of dolphins, and a vast array of Peruvian birds thriving in their intended environment.  Not an animal enthusiast? Not a problem.  La Reserva Nacional exhibits striking rock formations, dramatic coastal cliffs, as well as spectacular year round sun soaked beaches.  The scenery itself makes a day in the park well worth any travelers’ while.

The nature admiration does not have to end at the magnificent shoreline.  Las Islas Ballestas (the Ballestas Islands) are located approximately an hour and a half by boat from Paracas.  Do not let the recently coined nickname “The Poor Man’s Galapagos” mislead, the island tours wind through mystifying caves, provide unbeatable views of the peninsula, and reveal additional wildlife species such as the Chilean flamingo and Humboldt penguin.  Tours can be purchased in town and typically include a traditional Provincia de Pisco lunch.  Be sure not to forget a hat! With hundreds of birds flying above, one must take proper caution.

After a day of becoming one with nature, a bit of relaxation may be deservedly in order.  With just a short five-mile ride along the gorgeous coastline, visitors can make their way to the Spa of Paracas.  The Spa is an area located in the Pisco district and is home to an array of gentle beaches, upscale hotels, and renowned seafood.  While enjoying the cuisine and peaceful atmosphere, do not forget to truly embrace Peruvian culture by enjoying the deliciously famous and locally produced, Pisco Sour cocktail.

A welcoming town with a curious history, Paracas is sure to please travelers of all tastes.  The indigenous people, the indigenous fauna, and the indigenous landscapes are all equally inviting, as well as awe inspiring.  Book your trip to Paracas, Peru with today.
