Saint Thomas
U.S. Virgin Islands
By Christine M. Soltis

If you’re on a treasure hunt for the next best vacation, then consider Saint Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands.  Besides the joy of beaches and water sports, there are historical finds such as Fort Christian and Blackbeard’s Castle.  Or, take advantage of duty free shopping.  Take your next trek to Saint Thomas.

When flying to Saint Thomas, USVI, WhatsCheaper.com wants you to seek out Cyril E. King Airport (STT) for the Virgin Islands (U.S.).  Utilize WhatsCheaper.com to book your flight:  (https://www.whatscheaper.com/flight.php).  Find hotel accommodations here: (https://www.whatscheaper.com/hotel.php).

With your trip to Saint Thomas, WhatsCheaper.com wants to help you learn the island’s history.  Visit Fort Christian, a United States landmark, which also happens to be one of the oldest standing structures on the island.  Within the fort, you will be able to map out history at the included Virgin Islands Museum.  Inside this attached museum, pieces of military history and furniture are featured for you to view.

Next, WhatsCheaper.com recommends a stop at the famed 99 Steps, which was once created from bricks of Danish ships and used to connect parts of the town.  Although there are a few more than 99 steps, gallant to the top anyway.  This will lead you high above Charlotte Amalie.  Here, you can find remains from an old tower, which is connected to the Inn of Blackbeard’s Castle complex.  Originally built as a vantage point, this tower is the only fortified one in the Caribbean.  Recently, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  If you’d like even more views of Charlotte Amalie Harbor, take the Saint Thomas Skyride to Paradise Point.  This tram ride will glide you 700 feet above sea level where you may look down at the harbor and surrounding amazing scenery.

For more history, WhatsCheaper.com also recommends a visit to All Saints Episcopal Cathedral, which was constructed as a symbol to the end of slavery in the Virgin Islands.  Built of stone which is native to the islands, take a moment to browse ornate halls or even attend a service.

If all of this looking around has gotten you ready to settle down, keep in mind that the beach choices are endless!  For an isolated place, pick Bluebeard’s Beach, which is popular for its palm trees, windsurfing and snorkeling.  Or, head over to Bolongo Bay Beach, a crescent-shaped one, which has coconut trees and hammocks to make for a lazy day.  If you’re feeling more active while there, WhatsCheaper.com wants you to know there are opportunities for water sports with kayaks and other rental equipment available.  If you desire a busier atmosphere, hike on over to Sapphire Beach, which is one of the larger ones and is popular for locals and tourists alike.  While there, choose to snorkel, sunbathe or just enjoy the visual of colorful reefs stretching out along the edges.

If you are feeling brave, WhatsCheaper.com recommends a stop at Coral World Marine Park & Undersea Observatory.  You will see even more coral reef, or be brave and pet sharks or even feed a stingray.  You may remain stay dry here if you choose, while learning of aquatic creatures with the up close and personal observatory view.

The Virgin Islands are well known for their duty-free shopping so do not worry about finding souvenirs to take home with you.  Bargains can be found on designer fashions, jewelry, perfume and more.  Some of the main district shopping areas can be found downtown, at the Crown Bay Center, Yacht Haven Grande and Havensight.

There is so much to do in Saint Thomas; but if you want even more, consider a day trip ferry ride to other nearby, surrounding islands or seek out an eco-tour.

When it comes to Saint Thomas dining, the options are numerous; have pizza, burgers or wings or try out a fancy, local Caribbean dish.  For your night out, pop into a club, a pub, theater or a wine bar for a tantalizing time.
